Happiness at home

Home is where we want to feel safe, but also relaxed after busy days at work. Spending at least 10 hours away from home, home is like a mini holiday from the world for me, but how do you create this relaxing environment?

It's not always easy, but I want to share my point of view with you, which you can try to apply right away in your own home, always in small doses.

As I often say: one drop at a time, and you create a sea of change.

Keep only good energy

We often keep objects that we don't even know we have, or the usual gifts that we don't throw away (or give away) out of guilt. But all this holding on is like carrying lots of little pebbles in a bag every day, which eventually become a boulder.

During my last move, I adopted this rule very strictly:

I ONLY move what makes me smile

It may seem obvious and trivial, but you have no idea how much this affects our minds, so here is a short list of questions to always keep with you:

  • How long has it been since I last used it? If something has been hidden away for at least a year, and when I see it again it doesn't stir my heart, then it's time to put it aside.

  • Do I really need it? For example, in the kitchen, I often see eight ladles that are all similar, but the truth is that we have a favourite (two if you are a couple and your partner also cooks), so keep the ladle that makes you smile, because even (or especially) a happy mind in the kitchen will generate tastier dishes that are good for the soul.

  • Gifts to keep? Often, with the best of intentions, people want to give us a little something for Christmas or our birthday, but many times they don't get our tastes right at all. So put them away in a corner, and if at least six months have passed, give them to someone you know who can use them, or take them to a sorting centre (our home is NOT a storage centre). Just the fact of lightening our load will make us feel better. An extra tip: I often thank these items before letting them go, as I don't like them to “think” they are wrong, but simply that they are in the wrong house.

  • What are my super happy objects? That's a great question. I imagined I only had one week to take away what could contribute to my happiness and serenity, and during that week I really focused on what I saw in my home that aroused beautiful, truly beautiful and profound emotions in me. Clothes, shoes, kitchen utensils, shopping bags, photographs, home decorations, sheets... absolutely everything! This in-depth analysis changed the energy in my home from the ground up.
